Hepatitis B Core Antibody (Anti-HBc), Total Test

Hepatitis B is a liver disease that is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). In addition to being a sexually transmitted disease (STD), Hepatitis B is a bloodborne pathogen and exposure to the blood of an infected person may result in infection.

This test is used as a differential diagnosis of hepatitis; it is also used in conjunction with other B viral serologic markers, to assess the stage of hepatitis B infection. At times this may be the only demonstrable marker for the diagnosis of current or past hepatitis B viral infection.
