New discoveries may help treat herpesHerpes is the virus responsible for causing conditions ranging from chickenpox and shingles to cold sores and genital herpes. A new understanding of the way this virus spreads through the body could help scientists develop new treatments for genital herpes, a chronic condition, and other forms of the virus as well.

Research has found that due to a lack of antibodies, all age groups and especially teenagers are more likely to contract genital herpes than they were in decades past. The study, published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, found that today's teens are more likely to be less resistant to herpes simplex virus 1, which can cause genital herpes.
