Better sex education could lead to more STD testing

An official in the Illinois Department of Public Health said that abstinence-only programs are not effective and that students need better sex education in classrooms.
Charlie Rabins, chief of the STD program at the department, also called attention to popular culture, particularly some of the shows on television, the Norwich Bulletin reports.
"Popular culture glamorizes sex," Rabins said. "There are very few prevention messages."
The chief's comments follows recently released figures that the state experienced an all-time high rate of chlamydia with 59,169 cases reported last year.
In response to the high STD numbers, the state legislature recently passed a bill that would allow for expedited partner therapy (EPT).
With EPT, when a person comes in for an STD test, a doctor is allowed to prescribe a dose of treatment for the infected person's partner as well.
However, many health experts have urged young people who are sexually active to get a regular STD test to know their status. Those who do not want to get tested in a doctor's office may want to look into online STD testing.
