Women with lupus or rheumatoid arthritis may benefit from seeking FSH testing prior to trying to become pregnant. New research indicates that women with these conditions have high rates of infertility and frequently have fewer children than they would like.
The researchers who conducted the study said that many women with these conditions may choose to forego childbirth for health reasons, but their study found that there are high rates of infertility and miscarriages among these patient populations.
For the study, the team surveyed 578 women with rheumatoid arthritis and 114 with lupus. The results showed that a majority of women in both groups had fewer children than they would have wanted. High percentages of participants in both groups also reported struggling with fertility problems.
Aside from fertility issues, many women said they avoided pregnancy because they had concerns about their ability to care for their children, the effect of medications on a developing fetus and the threat of passing on genetic risk factors for diseases to children.
"Our study highlights important reproductive-health concerns for women with RA and lupus," said Dr. Megan Clowse, who led the study.
