A new study indicates that the two most commonly prescribed types of statin medications are equally as effective at improving the heart health of individuals who have received unhealthy cholesterol tests.
Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic reported in the New England Journal of Medicine that both Lipitor and Crestor reduce LDL cholesterol and boost HDL cholesterol without contributing to any risk of side effects.
Additionally, the two medications decrease the amount of arterial plaque that builds up in patients' arteries. This is a common problem among individuals with high cholesterol. As more lipids circulate through the bloodstream, they can collect, causing dangerous blockages that may lead to a heart attack or stroke when they rupture.
"[The study] demonstrates that the highest doses of the most effective statins currently available [are] safe, well tolerated and produce marked plaque regression," said Stephan Nicholls, who led the study.
He added that the fact that the two medications were shown to be so effective at improving cholesterol levels and decreasing plaque buildups should come as comforting news to patients taking them.
