In an effort to learn about any inherited conditions and inform the public of lab testing services, one woman decided to administer a DNA test and wrote about her experience for a news provider.
Lisa Davis, a mother of a 7-year-old, wrote a lengthy column for the Star-Telegram.com that documented her emotions before and after the results of her lab test.
"I'm hoping my DNA test will answer two questions: My mother had breast cancer, and I would like to know how much risk I inherited from her. I also want to know whether I am really descended from a Cherokee chief, as family legend has it," wrote Davis in the article.
After a "few weeks," Davis received her online lab test results.
Davis wrote she has a slight increased risk of psoriasis, which she knew about because of her father, states the website. She also found she has wet ear wax, which she commented as being "TMI" or too much information.
As for breast cancer, Davis found out she was "in the clear."
Women interested in finding out their level of risk for certain hereditary conditions may be interested to know DNA tests can be done online and through the mail.
