New study links low vitamin D levels to depression

Category: Vitamin D Deficiency-Diagnosis and Treatment

Individuals who experience depression may benefit from talking to their doctor about vitamin D testing, as a new study has shown that low levels of the nutrient may be closely associated with worsening symptoms of the mood disorder.

The study is not the first to link vitamin D levels to mood. However, it is among the largest. For the current investigation, researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center examined the mental health and vitamin D levels of nearly 12,600 individuals. Participants were tracked from 2006 to 2010.

The researchers found that patients with a past history of depression were able to improve their symptoms by increase their vitamin d levels. The lower a participant's vitamin D status, the more likely they were to experience significant depressive symptoms.

"Our findings suggest that screening for vitamin D levels in depressed patients - and perhaps screening for depression in people with low vitamin D levels - might be useful," said Dr. E. Sherwood Brown, who led the investigation.

Still, he said that further investigation would be needed before he and his team could definitively recommend vitamin D supplements for individuals who struggle with depression.ADNFCR-2248-ID-800678005-ADNFCR
