Counseling helps men treated for prostate cancer overcome sexual side effects

Category: Prostate

The greatest fear of many men following a positive PSA test for prostate cancer is that the condition will impact their sexual ability. Many of the treatments for the condition do increase an individual's risk of experiencing sexual side effects. However, a new study shows that couple's counseling may be one way to overcome some of these problems.

For the study, researchers from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center enrolled couples in which the man was being treated for prostate cancer into either an online or in-person couple's counseling program. The results showed that regardless of the type of therapy couples received, men reported improvements in many areas of sexual function after six months of treatment.

The team said that providing counseling options to couples online may actually offer some advantages to in-person treatment. Many individuals feel embarrassed to talk to professionals about these issues and few counselors may be trained to deal with mental health issues related poor sexual function and cancer treatment.

Online resources may help individuals overcomes the mental aspects of prostate cancer treatment while preserving their privacy.
