High cholesterol may lead to Alzheimer's

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

A German scientist's study has found people with high cholesterol levels at 50 years old may increase their risk for cognitive decline, which can lead to the development of Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Johannes Schröder from the University of Heidelberg in Germany, presented his findings recently at the at the 9th International Conference on Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease, DG News reports.

The participants in the study were examined at three different ages: 60, 65, and 75 years old, according to the article. At each examination, the subjects were measured for cognitive impairment or any other signs of dementia.

"We found that those subjects who had developed Alzheimer's disease already showed increased cholesterol levels when they were just 60 years old," Dr. Schröder told the news provider. "The same applied to patients with mild cognitive impairment."

People interested in general wellness may want to investigate getting a lab test to access their cholesterol levels. If a high level is found, there are various treatments that can help lower it that include nutritional supplements, medication or a change in diet.
