Researchers find new pathways to specific type of heart disease

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Cholesterol testing may help assess an individual's risk of developing a dangerous form of heart disease, according to a new study published in the journal Genes and Development.

Lipotoxic cardiomyopathy is a relatively common form of heart disease in which heart cells begin to accumulate within the organ, causing a dangerous obstruction of function. Diets that are high in cholesterol and fats are thought to be among the leading risk factors for the condition. However, the new study from the Stanford-Burnham Research Institute found that an imbalance of fats can also cause the condition.

In particular, when individuals replace phosphatidylethanolamine, a type of fat that is an important cellular building block, with less healthy fats, they are more likely to develop the condition.

"Our study shows that there is also an alternative cause of obesity and associated heart problems - an imbalance in the fats that normally make up the basic structure of our cells," said Hui-Ying Lim, the study's lead researcher.

He added that the finding could contribute to the development of new therapies that help treat the potentially dangerous condition.
