People who have a milk allergy, which may be diagnosed with the help of a lab test, may experience a range of symptoms when they consume dairy products, including vomiting and irritability. New research, published in the journal Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, suggests that children who have cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) may also be vulnerable to complications of the ears, nose and throat.
In order to investigate the health burden of CMPA in toddlers, a team of scientists reviewed the medical records of 191 CMPA patients aged 2 years and younger. A total of 25 patients had symptoms affecting their ears, nose and throat. The most common of these complications were airway congestion and difficulty swallowing.
Other data showed that 92 subjects who were placed on a diet that eliminated milk protein experienced improvements in digestive symptoms such as vomiting, poor weight gain, choking and irritability.
"This study raises the question of whether early management of CMPA could reduce the need for some surgical intervention of upper aerodigestive disorders in young children. The ability to identify CMPA early in infancy will have important benefits," the authors wrote in their study.
Early diagnosis of CMPA in toddlers may be possible with the help of a lab test.
