DDT Exposure Profile
This profile is used to monitor
exposure to DDT pesticides.
DDT pesticide poisoning is characterized
by neurological abnormalities, including general weakness, EEG changes, muscle
jerking, and emotional changes. Exposure to DDT pesticides at high concentrations
may lead to unconsciousness and death. DDT pesticides were employed in both
agricultural and domestic environments. DDT pesticides fall under governmental
regulations due to their persistence in the environment and potential for
promoting health hazards. DDD and DDE are both metabolites of DDT, which was
initially banned in 1973. However, DDT can be detected in people born after
1973. DDT persists in the environment and it has been suggested that it may
be coming into the country in imported food. Additionally, The United Nations'
Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants will allow 25 countries
to continue using DDT against malaria-spreading mosquitoes until a viable
alternative is found.
A significant deviation from the
normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
