Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Report: STDs prevalent in Philadelphia
Updated: 2009-03-25 19:12:25 CST Category: Sexually Transmitted Diseases
It appears there is more evidence to help convince people to get tested for STDs for early detection.
Despite having a school-based sex education program, Philadelphia has yet to see a reduction in the rate of STDs among its youth, the Bulletin reports. Nationally, the city ranks third for instances of chlamydia and sixth for gonorrhea.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), instances of the STDs are prevalent among Philadelphia youth, especially women and blacks between the ages of 15 and 24.
During the school year of 2007-2008, a total of 721 students tested positive for chlamydia and 36 tested positive for gonorrhea, states the Philadelphia Health Department. There were 50 students who tested positive for both STDs.
Chlamydia and gonorrhea are infections that can be transmitted during oral, vaginal or anal sex. Without treatment, the STDs can cause women to contract pelvic inflammatory disease and other serious conditions.
One of the ways to possibly reduce the spread of either disease is for people to an STD test. Those who want a more private way to learn their status may want to look into getting an online lab test.
