Groups urge STD testing

Category: Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Many sexually transmitted diseases do not present symptoms until they have progressed to a relatively advanced stage. At this point they are more difficult to treat. For this reason, experts say sexually active individuals should consider STD testing, even if they do not have symptoms. It is the only way they can be sure they are not infected.

Planned Parenthood of West and Northern Michigan recently began a campaign in recognition of national STD awareness month to encourage more people to get themselves tested, according to the Grand Rapids Press. The goal is to help prevent unforeseen health problems later in life.

"Since many STDs do not show any symptoms, testing and treatment is critical to reducing their spread," said Bridget White, the group's president. "If left untreated, STDs can increase a person’s risk of HIV infection, infertility, and cancer."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that regular STD testing is one of the most effective methods of stopping the transmission of infections. This is particularly true when so many people do not realize that they are carrying a disease.
