Cold-weather activities increase heart risk

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Individuals who have received unhealthy cholesterol test results may want to avoid excessive outdoor activity for the remainder of the winter. New evidence suggest that this may be dangerous for people with cardiovascular risk factors.

A team of researchers from Penn State University asked a group of healthy participants to engage in moderate physical activity in a cold setting. The activity consisted of squeezing a hand grip for two minutes. During this time the researchers monitored participants cardiovascular and respiratory function.

The results showed that the heart required higher levels of oxygen during the exercise. However, the cold air that the participants were breathing made it difficult for their lungs deliver adequate amounts of oxygen. The body's of the health participants were able to compensate for this problem and maintained relatively even cardiovascular function.

However, the researchers pointed out that this increase in oxygen demand and decrease in supply may lead to a cardiovascular event for those with heart health risk factors. They recommended that individuals with compromised cardiovascular function avoid activities like shoveling.
