Young people should be encouraged to practice safe sex, expert says

Category: Chlamydia

Encouraging young people, including teenagers, to seek STD testing may be an important part of controlling the spread of infections, experts say. Individuals under the age of 25 have the highest rates of diseases and are responsible for many new cases.

Raquel Simentel, the director of public affairs for the Sacramento region with Planned Parenthood, told the Sacramento News Review that she believes a lack of education among young people may be partially to blame for why they have such high rates of diseases. Many may simply be unaware of the importance of practicing safe sex.

"The rates are highest among 15- to 24-year-olds," she told the news source "If teens and young adults don't know they're risk, especially with STDs that are asymptomatic, like chlamydia, I really think that's a part of the puzzle."

She added that parents should either discuss with their children the risk of contracting an STD through unsafe sexual practices or find a responsible adult who is willing to have a frank talk with them.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that STD testing is the single most effective way to prevent the transmissions of infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis.
