Vitamin D Deficiency-Diagnosis and Treatment
Many at-risk individuals are unaware of vitamin D deficiency dangers
Updated: 2012-01-17 17:01:49 CST Category: Vitamin D Deficiency-Diagnosis and Treatment
Many individuals may benefit from vitamin D testing, as a new study indicates that a large percentage of individuals most at risk for experiencing a deficiency do not take steps to address the potential problem.
For the study, which was published in the British Journal of Medicine, researchers surveyed 221 individuals from high-risk groups about their knowledge of factors that can contribute to vitamin D deficiency. Participants included individuals with dark skin or those who covered their skin for cultural reasons.
The results showed that 34 percent of these individuals did not intentionally expose any of their skin besides their face to the sun for a year or more. Furthermore, 11 percent did not make efforts to include vitamin D-rich foods in their diets.
The researchers said that older individuals were significantly less informed about the dangers of vitamin D deficiency and that educational efforts should target this population. This may have a positive impact on the number of people who seek vitamin D testing and take steps to improve their nutritional status.
