Men who have learned from FSH testing that they have fertility problems may benefit from getting more of a certain omega-3 fatty acid into their diet. New research indicates that DHA plays a key role in the healthy formation of sperm cells.
DHA is a specific type of omega-3 that is synthesized in the body from longer-chain fatty acids. To test its effects on the formation of sperm cells, the researchers bred groups of mice to lack the gene necessary for this synthesis.
The results showed that the sperm of mice that were unable to synthesize DHA were less mobile and lacked properties necessary for puncturing an egg cell. The researchers said their findings show that DHA plays a critical role in a person's fertility.
"We looked at sperm count, shape, and motility, and tested the breeding success rate. The male mice that lacked DHA were basically infertile," said Manabu Nakamura, who led the investigation.
For men who have had FSH testing show that they are infertile, the findings of the present study may explain why. Getting more DHA into their diet may address the problem.
