Individuals who consume seven or more alcoholic drinks one to two nights per week may benefit from talking to their doctor about cholesterol testing, as a new study has shown that this pattern of drinking may lead to heart health problems.
Previous studies have shown that moderate alcohol consumption - roughly seven to 10 drinks per week - may actually support heart health. However, the new study indicates that it makes a difference how quickly those beverages are consumed.
Researchers from the University of Rochester administered the equivalent of one to two drinks per day to one group of lab mice and the equivalent of seven drink on two separate occasions to a second group.
The results showed that mice in the first section were significantly less likely to develop atherosclerosis, a condition marked by the hardening of the arteries caused by high cholesterol. However, those in second group were very prone to the condition, despite the fact that they consumed similar weekly amounts of alcohol.
The researchers said their findings may help clarify seemingly conflicting reports on the health effects of moderate alcohol consumption.
