Experts recommend early treatment for men with prostate cancer

Category: Prostate

Medical professionals are warning men that they should consider regular PSA testing to determine if they have prostate cancer starting in their 40s, as evidence continues to mount that treating the disease in younger men may have its benefits.

Prostate cancer is a slow moving disease and many men who develop it never end up experiencing any health complications. For this reason, some doctors have said that individuals who have a low risk of the disease shouldn't be concerned about PSA testing. Furthermore, if anything is found, patients should wait to see if it develops into anything dangerous.

However, a new investigation published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that men in their 40s who opted for surgery to remove prostate tumors were 39 percent less likely to die, according to news station WBAL.

"The younger guys really shouldn't wait. It's something that could eventually kill them," Dr. Alexis Gordon, who led the investigation, told the news source.

In 2007, nearly 30,000 men died from prostate cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Regular PSA testing and early treatment may help more men survive the condition.
