PSA testing is considered to be one of the most important tools that a man has to limit his risk of developing prostate cancer. However, many individuals are unaware of when they should begin getting testing, which may delay their first screening and increase their odds of developing the condition.
The American Cancer Society says that men who are at an average risk of developing prostate should begin talking to their doctors about PSA testing at about age 50. This is the time during which most individuals begin to be at a higher risk of the cancer.
However, the group states that this discussion should take place earlier in those who are in groups that are considered to be at a higher risk of prostate cancer due to race or genetics. These groups include African Americans and individuals who have a family history of the condition.
Depending on the results of these tests, doctors may recommend more frequent screening during the course of a man's adulthood.
Following these simple guidelines and talking about prostate cancer with a doctor may significantly reduce a man's risk of developing the condition and experiencing the health consequences that accompany it.
