As various national campaigns continue to raise awareness about getting an STD test and the benefits that come along with it, more states are reporting high rates of infected residents with chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis.
If treated early, the three mentioned STDs can be cured with the right medication. However, if left untreated, each can lead to serious health complications that include infertility, blindness and dementia.
Recently the Southern Nevada Health District released figures that showed in the first three months of this year, the state recorded 2,249 cases of chlamydia, 437 of gonorrhea and 40 syphilis cases. If these numbers continue throughout the year, it's possible there will be an increase in STD cases in Nevada when compared to last year.
During National STD Awareness Month, some campaigns have made an effort to get the word out to a younger generation about getting an STD test.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends routine chlamydia testing for women under age 26. The CDC also recommends routine HIV testing for those aged 13-64.
