Researchers continue search for early warning signs of cancer

Category: Breast

While PSA testing and mammography are considered to be the staples of prostate and breast cancer testing respectively, scientists may soon be able to detect the diseases even earlier using state-of-the-art biomarker technology.

A team of researchers from Florida State University said that biomarkers could provide doctors with an early look at what is happening inside their patients' bodies. They are proteins that are produced by specific disease, and are particularly noticeable in cancers. However, finding which biomarkers are associated with specific forms of the disease has been a frustrating exercise so far.

By focusing on prostate and breast cancer, Qing-Xian Sang and her team believe that they may be able to find the biomarkers that provide the earliest possible warning of the disease. Both forms of cancer can be treated relatively easily when they are diagnosed in their early stages, but they can become deadly if they are allowed to develop.

"If we can identify new and more accurate biomarkers that offer even earlier glimpses of these diseases, we stand a better chance of offering patients the most customized treatment possible, then, being able to closely monitor their progress, provide follow-up treatment as needed," said Sang.
