Online STD testing has become a popular option for many individuals, as they do not have to go through the potential embarrassment of visit to their doctor. They have been proven to be such a popular and effective method of getting people screened, that now the city of Los Angeles is looking to the testing methods to battle rising rates of infections.
City officials said Los Angeles has the highest number of chlamydia cases and the second highest number of gonorrhea cases of any county in the U.S. The city is now pinning its hopes for addressing the problem on at-home STD testing kits.
Individuals can order testing kits from kiosks placed around the city, worker placed in affected neighborhoods and online. Supplies will be delivered to people's homes and can be sent back via the mail.
"Unfortunately, these infectious diseases are at unacceptable levels and are increasing, particularly among young African-American women," said City Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas. "These are our mothers, our sisters, our daughters who are suffering from the health consequences of these STDs, and we cannot let them go untreated."
