This test is ideal if you're sexually active and want to screen for syphilis, or if you've been exposed to someone with syphilis. It helps detect and confirm syphilis infection, which is important because early-stage syphilis often has mild or no symptoms but can cause serious health problems if left untreated. Many people use this test for routine sexual health screening, after unprotected sex, or when experiencing symptoms like unusual sores, rashes, or swollen lymph nodes.
No special preparation is needed for this test. You don't need to fast, and you can take your regular medications. The blood sample can be collected at any time of day. Just arrive at the lab with your test order, and the blood draw typically takes just a few minutes.
This panel uses a two-step approach to accurately diagnose syphilis. It starts with an RPR screening test that detects antibodies your body produces in response to syphilis infection. If the RPR is positive, it automatically reflexes to additional confirmatory testing including titer levels (which measure infection severity) and Treponema pallidum antibody testing to verify the diagnosis and rule out false positives. This comprehensive approach provides both accurate diagnosis and information about disease activity.
What this means
Your RPR test came back negative, meaning no antibodies associated with syphilis infection were detected in your blood. This is the expected and healthy result, indicating no current syphilis infection.
Recommended actions
Continue practicing safe sex with barrier protection like condoms
Consider regular STI screening every 6-12 months if sexually active
Maintain open communication with sexual partners about testing
Retest if you have potential exposure or develop unusual sores or rashes
