This test is ideal if you have been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer or certain ovarian cancers and need to monitor how your treatment is working. It measures CA 15-3, a protein that often increases when these cancers are present or progressing. Many people use this test regularly during treatment to track whether cancer levels are rising, falling, or staying stable.
No special preparation is typically required for this test. You can eat and drink normally before your blood draw and continue taking your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise. Simply visit your chosen lab location during their operating hours for a quick blood sample collection.
This test measures Cancer Antigen 15-3 (CA 15-3), a tumor marker protein that is often elevated in people with metastatic breast cancer and certain ovarian cancers. Sequential CA 15-3 measurements over time show a high correlation with how the disease is progressing or responding to treatment in most patients. This marker helps your healthcare team understand whether cancer is growing, shrinking, or remaining stable.
What this means
Your CA 15-3 level is elevated above the normal reference range. While elevated levels are commonly seen in metastatic breast cancer and certain ovarian cancers, they should be interpreted by your oncologist alongside imaging and other clinical findings to assess disease status and treatment response.
Recommended actions
Share these results with your oncologist immediately for clinical correlation
Continue following your prescribed cancer treatment plan exactly as directed
Schedule any recommended imaging or additional tests to monitor disease progression
Retest CA 15-3 every 1-3 months during treatment as recommended by your care team
