At-home STD testing may increase utilization

Category: Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Many people find the prospect of going into a health clinic and asking for an STD test to be an embarrassing process. For this reason, testing is often avoided, which may put individuals at a higher risk for potentially dangerous infections.

In order to overcome this problem, many public health agencies are trying to spread the word about inexpensive and accurate at-home STD testing options, which are becoming a more popular way to check for infections, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Charlotte Gaydos, a professor of infectious diseases at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, told the news source that young people are most affected by STDs. By providing testing options over a format that they are familiar with - namely the internet - she expects testing rates to go up.

"The highest prevalence is in young adults, and we knew we had to reach these kids," she told the news source. "They were always on the internet, and now, on their smart phones. They weren't going to ask their mothers to take them to a clinic."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that regular STD testing among sexually active individuals is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of infections.
