Genetic markers could improve fertility testing

Category: Infertitlity Hormone Testing

FSH testing plays an important role in assessing a woman's current fertility. However, it is less effective at predicting future childbearing ability. Now, a team of researchers from the Stanford School of Medicine have identified a set genetic markers may improve predictive ability.

For the study, researchers analyzed DNA and hormone samples form a large group of women of reproductive age. The results identified a set of genetic markers that may be useful for predicting future fertility.

Rather than replacing traditional hormone assessments like FSH testing, which are today's standard measure of fertility testing, the new markers could help improve the interpretation of these assessments, the researchers said.

Hormone levels are still the strongest predictor of current fertility, but they can fluctuate. The genetic test may help doctors know if these changes are the result of temporary changes or if they are a sign of permanently impaired fertility.

"Ultimately, a test for specific genetic markers would be easier and could give them more information and more power to make reproductive decisions," said Sonya Schuh-Huerta, who led the study.
