Doctors divided over thyroid testing results
Updated: 2010-05-19 18:34:11 CST Category: Thyroid Diseases

Thyroid testing
can be a useful tool for diagnosing potential dysfunctions and cancer in the gland. However, medical experts are divided about what to do with the results once a problem has been discovered.
Most doctors recommend treating thyroid cancer immediately, as the gland can spread the malignancy throughout the body, resulting in further complications.
However, a recent controversial study suggested that immediate treatment of thyroid cancer makes no significant difference in the long-term survival rates of individuals diagnosed with the disease.
Dr Louise Davies found that the 20 year survival rate of people who received immediate treatment for the disease was 99 percent, while those who delayed treatment had a survival rate of 97 percent.
Davies said that the results should cause doctors to weigh more heavily the potential risks associated with treating the disease, and consider monitoring thyroid growths rather than rushing to remove them.
The American Cancer Society released a statement that said the results of the study were "thought-provoking," but that leaving many thyroid cancers untreated may be risky.
