PSA testing may predict risk of prostate cancer metastasis and death

Category: Prostate

PSA testing is one of the most effective ways to detect prostate cancer. However, a new study has found that screening may also predict whether or not the cancer will spread to other areas of the body, as well as how deadly it may be.

Even following removal of the prostate gland, men are at risk of the cancer spreading throughout the body. Currently, they are prescribed radiation therapy to guard against recurrence. However, researchers from Fox Chase Cancer Center found that PSA testing may reduce the need for continuing radiation therapy.

After examining the medical records of 222 men who had their prostates removed, researchers found that PSA levels were a strong predictor of whether or not the cancer will continue to spread throughout the body.

"These results provide us with an opportunity to identify patients who should be treated aggressively, before we see any other evidence of prostate cancer," said Mark Buyyounouski, who led the study. "It's important because if you can identify people who are more likely to die of prostate cancer early, you can talk with them about doing another treatment very quickly."
