This test is ideal if you're experiencing unexplained fatigue, frequent infections, bone pain, or have been told you have abnormal protein levels in your blood. It helps detect plasma cell disorders like multiple myeloma, which can affect your immune system and bone health. Many people use this test when their doctor suspects an underlying blood or immune condition that needs investigation.
No special preparation is typically required for this test. You can eat and drink normally before your blood draw. However, inform your doctor if you're taking any medications or have received contrast dye recently, as these may affect results in rare cases.
This panel measures free kappa and lambda light chains, which are protein fragments produced by plasma cells in your immune system, and calculates the ratio between them. An abnormal ratio can indicate your body is producing too many abnormal plasma cells, which may signal conditions like multiple myeloma, amyloidosis, or other blood disorders. Together, these measurements help identify serious immune system issues that affect your energy levels and overall health.
What this means
Your kappa/lambda ratio is slightly elevated, indicating your body is producing more kappa light chains relative to lambda chains. While this could be due to various factors, an elevated ratio may suggest abnormal plasma cell activity that warrants further evaluation and monitoring.
Recommended actions
Follow up with your healthcare provider to discuss these results and determine if additional testing is needed
Keep track of any symptoms like fatigue, bone pain, or frequent infections
Maintain a healthy immune system through adequate sleep, stress management, and balanced nutrition
Consider retesting in 2-3 months or as recommended by your doctor to monitor trends
