Blood Test Tips

Clothing:

  • Try to wear a short sleeve top so you don't have issues rolling up your sleeves.
  • If you can't, then something with easily rollable sleeves will do.
  • Avoid - tight fitting tops/shirts with long sleeves.
  • Avoid - white clothes. Most cases it won't matter but even a tiny drop of blood can stain white clothes.

Exercise:

  • Before: Avoid strenuous exercise 24h before the test as it may throw off some of your results. Hormones, creatinine kinase, and even cortisol will be elevated after a heavy session.
  • After: Avoid strenuous exercise after the procedure to let your vein rest a bit. Give yourself at least 1h after the blood is drawn and don't go for PR's (Personal Record).
  • Ideally take a day off and your vein will likely be back to normal for lifting without mild discomfort.
  • If you feel any discomfort or pain the same or following day don't lift anything heavy.

Eating & Fasting:

  • In the email accompanying your requisition document and on the patient portal you will find the fasting requirements for your test. Please read them carefully.
  • If your test requires you to be in a "fasted state" that means consume only water (and nothing else) for the amount of time specified. You'll find the instructions in your patient portal and email accompanying your requisition document.
