This test is ideal if your doctor suspects you have a rare immune system disorder or certain types of blood cancers like multiple myeloma. It measures IgD, a type of antibody that's normally present at very low levels but can be extremely high in some conditions. This test helps doctors diagnose hyperimmunoglobulinemia IgD syndrome (HIDS), which causes recurrent fevers and inflammation, or detect certain types of myeloma that produce excessive IgD antibodies.
No special preparation is typically required for the IgD blood test. You can eat and drink normally before your appointment and take your regular medications unless your healthcare provider gives you specific instructions otherwise. Simply arrive at the lab during their operating hours for your blood draw.
This test measures IgD (Immunoglobulin D), a specific type of antibody protein that accounts for less than 1% of total immunoglobulins in healthy individuals. Measuring IgD levels helps identify rare immune disorders like hyperimmunoglobulinemia IgD syndrome and certain types of multiple myeloma where IgD production becomes abnormally elevated. This specialized measurement provides crucial diagnostic information that standard immune panels don't typically include.
What this means
Your IgD level is significantly elevated above the normal range. While healthy individuals typically have very low IgD levels (under 10 mg/dL), elevated levels may indicate a rare immune disorder or require further investigation for conditions like multiple myeloma or hyperimmunoglobulinemia IgD syndrome.
Recommended actions
Follow up with your doctor immediately to discuss these results and next steps
Your doctor may refer you to a hematologist or immunologist for specialized evaluation
Additional testing such as protein electrophoresis or bone marrow biopsy may be recommended
Keep a symptom diary noting any fevers, joint pain, or unusual symptoms to share with your specialist
