This test is ideal if you've been exposed to Hepatitis B, work in healthcare, or need to verify your immunity status. It helps detect past Hepatitis B infections that may have resolved on their own or determine if you've been infected before, even if you never had symptoms. Many people use this test to confirm their liver health status or as part of routine infectious disease screening.
If you're taking high-dose biotin supplements (also called vitamin B7, B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R), you should stop taking them at least 72 hours before your blood draw. Biotin can interfere with some of the test components and affect result accuracy. Other than this supplement restriction, no special preparation like fasting is required for this test.
This test measures Hepatitis B Core Antibody Total, which indicates whether you've ever been exposed to the Hepatitis B virus. This antibody can appear during active infection or persist for years after recovery, helping identify both current and past infections. It's particularly valuable because it may be the only remaining marker of Hepatitis B infection when other antibodies have disappeared, providing crucial information about your liver health history and immune status.
What this means
Your test came back negative, meaning no Hepatitis B Core antibodies were detected in your blood. This indicates you have not been exposed to or infected with Hepatitis B virus in the past. If you're at risk for exposure, you should consider getting vaccinated for protection.
Recommended actions
Discuss Hepatitis B vaccination with your doctor if you're at risk
Practice safe behaviors to avoid bloodborne pathogen exposure
Consider testing annually if you work in healthcare or have other risk factors
Maintain awareness of transmission routes including needles and unprotected contact
