This test is ideal if you're experiencing persistent stomach pain, unexplained nausea, or recurring digestive issues like heartburn or ulcers. It helps identify if your body is producing too much or too little gastrin, a hormone that regulates stomach acid production. Many people use this test when they have ongoing digestive discomfort that hasn't been explained by standard tests, or when doctors suspect conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
You should fast for 12 hours before testing, which includes avoiding coffee and any caffeine-containing drinks. You'll also need to avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to the test. Your healthcare practitioner may ask you to stop taking certain stomach medications like antacids, H2-blockers (such as cimetidine), or proton pump inhibitors (such as omeprazole) for several days before testing, as these can increase gastrin levels and affect your results.
This test measures Gastrin. Gastrin is a hormone produced by cells in your stomach lining that regulates stomach acid production, which is essential for proper digestion. Abnormal gastrin levels can indicate various digestive conditions including gastrin-secreting tumors, gastric ulcers, or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, helping explain persistent stomach pain, nausea, and digestive discomfort.
What this means
Your gastrin level is slightly elevated above the optimal range. While this is not necessarily alarming, it may indicate your stomach is producing excess acid, which could contribute to heartburn, stomach pain, or digestive discomfort you've been experiencing.
Recommended actions
Avoid foods that trigger acid production like spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol
Eat smaller, more frequent meals rather than large portions
Discuss with your doctor about temporarily stopping acid-reducing medications before retesting
Consider retesting in 8-12 weeks to monitor trends
