This test is ideal if you're experiencing unexplained fever, severe headaches, joint and muscle pain, or rash after traveling to tropical or subtropical regions where dengue is common. It helps detect current or past dengue infection by measuring IgM antibodies (indicating recent infection) and IgG antibodies (showing past exposure). Many people use this test when they've had mosquito exposure in dengue-endemic areas and want to confirm whether their symptoms are dengue-related.
No special preparation is needed for this test. You don't need to fast or avoid any foods or medications beforehand. For the most accurate results, testing is typically recommended 5 days or more after symptom onset, as antibodies take time to develop. If you're experiencing severe symptoms like persistent vomiting, bleeding, or severe abdominal pain, seek immediate medical attention before testing.
This test measures both IgM and IgG antibodies to dengue virus, which work together to tell the complete story of your infection status. IgM antibodies appear early during an active infection (typically 3-5 days after symptoms start), while IgG antibodies indicate past exposure or later-stage infection. Together, these measurements help distinguish between a new dengue infection requiring immediate care and past exposure that may provide some immunity.
What this means
Your test came back negative for dengue IgM antibodies, meaning no evidence of recent or current dengue infection was detected. This is the expected and healthy result if you have not been recently infected with dengue virus.
Recommended actions
Use EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET when traveling to tropical regions
Wear long sleeves and pants in dengue-endemic areas, especially during dawn and dusk
Eliminate standing water around your home to prevent mosquito breeding
Consider retesting if you develop fever and joint pain after mosquito exposure
