This test is ideal if you're concerned about bone health, have a family history of osteoporosis, or are experiencing unexplained bone pain or frequent fractures. It measures how quickly your bones are breaking down, helping identify early signs of bone loss before serious complications develop. Many people use this test when they're at risk for osteoporosis due to age, menopause, medication use, or want to monitor the effectiveness of bone-strengthening treatments.
You'll need to fast for at least 12 hours before your test, meaning no food or beverages except water. Schedule your blood draw for early morning between 8-10 am, as bone markers naturally fluctuate throughout the day and are elevated at night. If you take high-dose biotin supplements (vitamin B7 or B8), stop taking them at least 72 hours before your test, as they can interfere with results.
This test measures C-Telopeptide (CTx), a biomarker that indicates how rapidly your bones are breaking down. CTx levels reveal the rate of bone resorption, which is crucial for assessing your risk for osteoporosis and predicting fracture risk. This measurement helps determine if you need intervention to slow bone loss and is also valuable for monitoring whether osteoporosis treatments are working effectively.
