Trichomonas vaginalis RNA, Qualitative, TMA (Female) - (QUEST DIAGNOSTICS)

Description: Trichomoniasis (or “trich”) is a very common sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is caused by infection with a protozoan parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. Although symptoms of the disease vary, most women and men who have the parasite cannot tell they are infected.

Trichomoniasis is considered the most common curable STD. In the United States, an estimated 3.7 million people have the infection, but only about 30% develop any symptoms of trichomoniasis. Infection is more common in women than in men, and older women are more likely than younger women to have been infected.

Males, please order the Male version of this test: Trichomonas vaginalis RNA, Qualitative, TMA (Males)

Significant deviations from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.

Includes: Trichomonas vaginalis RNA, Qualitative, TMA

Patient Instructions: The patient should not have urinated for at least one hour prior to specimen collection. Patient to provide a first-catch urine (approximately 20-30 mL of the initial urine stream) into a urine collection cup free of any preservatives. Collection of larger volumes of urine may result in specimen dilution that may reduce test sensitivity. Patients should not cleanse the labial area prior to providing the specimen.

Estimated turnaround for results is 5 business days. If confirmation testing is required the estimated time may be extended.
