Nicotine and Cotinine, LC/MS/MS, Urine - (QUEST DIAGNOSTICS)
Description: This assay is used for the detection of nicotine and cotinine in urine to determine the tobacco exposure status of the individual. Nicotine has a short half-life of approximately forty minutes; Its presence may indicate recent tobacco exposure. Cotinine, the major nicotine metabolite, has a half-life of 24 hours and is detectable for several days after cessation of tobacco exposure.
Description: This test is used to detect active smoking, medical surveillance and smoking cessation programs. Cotinine is the major metabolite of nicotine and may be detected for as long as 7 days after exposure. Cutoff is set high to rule out passive inhalation.
Significant deviations from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
