This test is primarily used to diagnose pheochromocytoma, a rare type of cancer, and similar tumors which may secrete epinephrine, norepinephrine, or both.

Overnight fasting is required. Fasting is defined as no consumption of food or beverage other than water for at least 8 hours before testing.
Patient should avoid alcohol, coffee, tea, tobacco and strenuous exercise prior to collection. Patients should be relaxed in either a supine or upright position before blood is drawn. States of anxiety and stress can cause fluctuations in the catecholamine levels.
