Prolactin

1Biomarkers
Earn 53 points
Measures the level of prolactin hormone, crucial for lactation, reproductive health & mood regulation.
Both men and women typically have low prolactin levels.
In men, high levels can interfere with testosterone production.
In postpartum women, it stimulates & sustains lactation. Levels surge during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but they can also fluctuate due to exercise, stress, or sleep, highlighting the dynamic nature of this hormone.
The prolactin test also serves as a tool for detecting abnormalities such as pituitary gland tumors, which can lead to excessive prolactin production. Therefore, the test also aids in identifying underlying conditions that may require attention.
Prolactin, serum
Overnight fasting is preferred. Fasting is defined as no consumption of food or beverage other than water for at least 8 - 10 hours before testing.
Estimated turnaround for results is 3 business days. If confirmation testing is required, the estimated time may be extended.
Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) (MALES ONLY)

Earn 53 points
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a glycoprotein produced by the epithelial cells lining the prostatic ducts and acini. Normally, it is secreted into the prostatic ducts and is present only in prostate tissue, prostatic fluid, and seminal plasma. PSA is produced by normal, hyperplastic, and cancerous prostatic tissue. PSA is used as a tumor marker for the early detection of prostate cancer and in other areas of prostate disease management. Elevated serum PSA concentrations have been reported in men with prostate cancer, benign prostatic hypertrophy, and inflammatory conditions of the prostate.
The Prostate-Specific Antigen Best Practice Statement: 2009 Update published by the American Urologic Association describes the use of PSA testing for:
The evaluation of men at risk for prostate cancer
Assistance in pretreatment staging
Risk assessment posttreatment monitoring
Use as a guide in management of men who recur after primary or secondary therapy
Significant deviations from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
Please Note: This test is for male clients only, due to ordering restrictions on certain tests, the PSA test will not be included on the requisition and will not be performed when ordered by females.

Prolactin

Both men and women usually have low levels of prolactin. High levels of prolactin, interfere with the man's ability to produce testosterone.
Prolactin is a protein hormone of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland that induces and maintains lactation in the postpartum women.
During pregnancy and postpartum lactation, serum prolactin can increase 10- to 20-fold. Exercise, stress, and sleep also cause transient increases in prolactin levels. Consistently elevated serum prolactin levels (>30 ng/mL), in the absence of pregnancy and postpartum lactation, are indicative of hyperprolactinemia. Hypersecretion of prolactin can be caused by pituitary adenomas, hypothalamic disease, breast or chest wall stimulation, renal failure or hypothyroidism. A number of drugs, including many antidepressants, are also common causes of abnormally elevated prolactin levels. Hyperprolactinemia often results in galactorrhea, amenorrhea, and infertility in women, and in impotence and hypogonadism in men. Renal failure, hypothyroidism, and prolactin-secreting pituitary adenomas are also common causes of abnormally elevated prolactin levels.
A significant deviation from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.

Are there any charges at the lab after I place my order?
No, there will be no charges at the lab.
Here’s the only requirement: if you have a Quest Diagnostics lab order (requisition), you can only go to any Quest Diagnostics Patient Service Center listed on our website. Similarly, if you have a LabCorp lab order, it has to be presented at a LabCorp Patient Service Center.
It's important to note that if you present your requisition to the wrong lab company, we won't be able to assist you with any billing issues that may arise.
If you have any doubts or questions about the process or which lab to visit, please text us at 754-799-7833 or email [email protected]. We're always here to help and provide the guidance you need.
How do I read my test results?
For each test, you can either download the standard PDF just like it comes from the lab or use our brand-new Smart Health Reports feature with helpful insights & and easy-to-read graphs for each biomarker. You’ll see it in your patient portal automatically when your results are ready (sample report).
However, if you choose to view the standard PDF, on the left side of the page, you'll find the names of the tests performed.
The next column displays your test levels, followed by indicators such as low/high/alert/critical if your levels fall outside the normal range.
Lastly, you'll find the column listing the normal ranges for each test (sample report).
These normal ranges provide valuable information to assess whether your levels are within the expected range or if they're on the borderline. Comparing your levels to the listed ranges allows you to gauge where you stand.

How soon after placing my order can I go into the lab?
Most orders are processed within 1 hour.
You can book your appointment right after you’re done placing an order. You’ll see the option to cancel/reschedule the appointment in the confirmation email that you’ll receive after scheduling the appointment. You can also book or update your appointment through your patient portal.
You can book your LabCorp appointment here: www.labcorp.com/labs-and-appointments. After booking, keep an eye on your inbox for a confirmation email. It will not only confirm your appointment but also provide instructions on how to reschedule or cancel if needed.
For your appointment just bring your ID – no printing or faxing of your lab order is needed, as your order and details will already be in the lab system.
