This test is ideal if you're experiencing persistent fatigue, weakness, or low energy that just won't go away. It helps identify vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies that can cause tiredness, poor concentration, mood changes, and even anemia. Many people use this test when they suspect their diet or absorption issues might be affecting their energy levels and overall vitality.
If you're taking biotin supplements (also called vitamin B7, B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R), you should stop taking them at least 72 hours before your blood draw. High doses of biotin can interfere with some of the test results. Otherwise, no fasting or special preparation is typically required for this test.
This test measures your Folate (Serum) and Vitamin B12 levels, two essential B vitamins that work together to support energy production, red blood cell formation, and nervous system health. Low levels of either can cause fatigue, weakness, poor concentration, and anemia, while adequate levels are crucial for maintaining energy, mental clarity, and overall vitality. Together, these measurements help identify nutritional deficiencies that may be affecting how you feel day to day.
What this means
Your vitamin B12 level is slightly below the optimal range. While this is not critically low, it may contribute to fatigue, difficulty concentrating, or feeling run down. Addressing this now can help prevent more serious symptoms from developing.
Recommended actions
Include more B12-rich foods like fish, beef, eggs, and dairy products in your diet
Consider a B12 supplement, especially if you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet
Limit alcohol consumption as it can interfere with B12 absorption
Retest in 2-3 months after making dietary changes or starting supplementation
