This test is ideal if you're experiencing unexplained fatigue, weight changes, mood swings, or feeling unusually cold. It helps determine if you're getting enough iodine in your diet, which is essential for proper thyroid function and metabolism. Many people use this test when they suspect thyroid issues or want to check if they're getting adequate iodine from their diet.
You'll need to collect all of your urine over a full 24-hour period in the container provided by the lab. Start the collection after your first morning urination by discarding that sample, then collect all urine for the next 24 hours, including the first urination the following morning. Keep the collection container refrigerated during this period and return it to the lab as soon as possible after completing the collection.
This test measures the total amount of iodine excreted in your urine over a 24-hour period. This measurement serves as an index of whether you're getting adequate iodine intake from your diet, which is crucial for thyroid hormone production. Iodine levels directly impact your thyroid's ability to regulate metabolism, energy levels, body temperature, and overall hormonal balance.
What this means
Your iodine levels are slightly below the optimal range, indicating your dietary iodine intake may be insufficient. This can affect your thyroid's ability to produce adequate hormones, potentially contributing to fatigue, weight changes, or difficulty with temperature regulation. Increasing iodine-rich foods in your diet should help bring your levels into the optimal range.
Recommended actions
Include more iodine-rich foods like seafood, dairy products, and eggs in your diet
Use iodized salt when cooking instead of sea salt or kosher salt
Consider eating seaweed snacks or adding kelp to soups and salads
Retest in 8-12 weeks after making dietary changes to monitor improvement
