Preparation for these tests includes fasting for 12-14 hours, as well as avoiding ejaculation 24 hours preceding the test. Patients who are undergoing testosterone replacement therapy should also avoid using any testosterone creams or other medications on the antecubital area of their arm for the last 24 hours prior to the test, as it can give elevated results. In addition, some tests also require males to supply a urine specimen in order for it to be examined by the lab. Reference ranges for these tests will be supplied by the laboratory; however, they should be discussed at length with your doctor if an abnormality exists, as your doctor may have a range for certain tests built specifically around your health as an individual.
