Types of parasites we test for

The exam may detect the presence of the following important human parasites and/or their cysts:

Parasite Issues Benefits of testing

Beaver Fever

(Giardia lamblia)

Giardia is one of the most common causes of waterborne infections. It leads to gastrointestinal issues, including persistent diarrhea, abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, and fatigue. Identifying Giardia allows for targeted treatment, helping patients alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort and digestive health problems caused by the parasite.

Coccidia / Isospora

(Coccidia species, including Isospora belli)

Causes coccidiosis, which primarily leads to diarrhea and dehydration, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. It may also cause fever and weight loss. Testing for coccidia helps pinpoint the cause of chronic diarrhea and dehydration, ensuring the patient receives proper treatment and preventing further health deterioration.

Amoeba

(Entamoeba histolytica & Entamoeba dispar)

Responsible for amoebiasis, a disease that causes severe gastrointestinal issues, including bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, and, in some cases, liver abscesses. Testing for Entamoeba histolytica helps uncover the root cause of gastrointestinal distress and more serious conditions like liver infections, enabling the right treatment to prevent serious complications.

Crypto

(Cryptosporidium parvum/hominis)

Causes cryptosporidiosis, leading to watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, dehydration, nausea, and weight loss. It is particularly dangerous for immunocompromised individuals. Detecting Cryptosporidium allows patients to address chronic diarrhea and malnutrition issues, especially in vulnerable populations, and helps prevent dehydration and further complications.

Blood fluke

(Schistosoma mansoni / haematobium)

Causes schistosomiasis, leading to rash, fever, muscle aches, and chronic abdominal pain. Over time, it can damage the liver, kidneys, and bladder, leading to severe long-term complications. Early detection of Schistosoma mansoni helps prevent chronic organ damage and allows for timely treatment of schistosomiasis, reducing the risk of long-term health problems.

Microsporidia

(Microsporidia species)

Primarily affect individuals with weakened immune systems, including those with HIV/AIDS. They cause chronic diarrhea, wasting, and abdominal pain. In severe cases, they can lead to malnutrition and more serious complications like organ damage. Helps identify the presence of these parasites early, particularly in immunocompromised individuals, allowing for targeted treatment to prevent malnutrition and further deterioration of health.

Non-pathogenic parasites

Do not directly cause disease but indicate exposure to contaminated water or unsanitary conditions. These parasites serve as markers for potential environmental health risks, such as poor hygiene or unclean water sources. Identifying non-pathogenic parasites can indicate exposure to unclean environments and help patients take preventive measures to avoid more serious parasitic infections in the future.
