High levels of vitamin E may decrease risk of liver cancer

Category: Liver

A team of scientists discovered that people who consume high levels of vitamin E through their diet or with the help of nutritional supplements may have a lower risk of liver cancer compared to individuals who have a smaller average intake of this nutrient. These findings may be relevant to people who are considering a lab test to assess the health of their liver.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that scientific evidence suggests may help protect DNA from damage, a mechanism that may lead to cancer. In order to measure the impact of vitamin E on the risk of malignancies of the liver, researchers from the Shanghai Cancer Institute reviewed medical data collected from nearly 133,000 adults who participated in national health studies. The information included details about diet and the use of nutritional supplements.

Within this cohort, more than 250 individuals developed liver cancer.

"We found a clear, inverse dose-response relation between vitamin E intake and liver cancer risk," the authors wrote in their study, which is published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

These results were consistent regardless of self-reported liver disease status or family history of liver cancer.

Individuals who undergo a lab test to assess their liver health may want to consider whether they are consuming enough vitamin E.
