Free cholesterol testing raises awareness
Updated: 2009-09-04 22:56:40 CST Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol
by Brendan Missett In recognition of National Cholesterol Education Month, an Arizona clinic will provide free cholesterol testing to the community in an effort to spark awareness.
Kyrene Medical Center Internal Medicine, a primary care clinic located in Chandler, Arizona opens its offices from Tuesday, September 8th until Friday, September 11th from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m.
The test, administered by a "finger poke", measure total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein, non high density lipoprotein and the TC/HDL Ratio. The cholesterol test results will be available after 5 minutes and will offer a comparison to normal ranges for each factor tested.
Representatives from Kyrene say the objective of the free screen sessions is to "create awareness and generate discussions between patients and their primary care physicians about cholesterol and the effects and risks of heart disease." The offer falls in line with what the medical center purveys as a philosophy of preventive medicine.
According to research by the American Heart Association, adults whose cholesterol levels reach 240 mg/dL or higher are considered being at high risk.
Those planning to attend Kyrene's cholesterol testing are reminded to fast 8 hours before the test is performed.
