Pancreatitis is a condition that occurs when the pancreas, an organ behind the stomach, becomes swollen and painful. The pancreas produces digestive enzymes and insulin. The digestive enzymes flow into the small intestine to help break down food. Insulin is released into the blood to control the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Significant deviations from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.

Lipase, Serum

This Lipase test is used to measure the amount of the enzyme lipase. Elevated levels of lipase are an indicator of pancreatitis. A significant deviation from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.

What is a Pancreatitis Test?

A Pancreatitis test is prescribed by physicians to measure the amount of lipase in a patientís blood, helping them determine whether or not a patientís symptoms are related to pancreatitis. High levels of lipase that lead to the condition known as pancreatitis are found in an individualís blood when their pancreas has been damaged or when their pancreatic duct, which leads to the small intestine, is blocked.

Who May Need a Pancreatitis Test?

Patients whose physicians suspect they may have pancreatitis are most often prescribed this test, though they can also be used as a signal for other diseases of the pancreas as well. In patients who are undergoing treatment for pancreatitis, many physicians will prescribe this test to see if the treatments are working effectively. Pancreatitis tests can also be utilized to check a patient for cystic fibrosis, as well as checking to see if treatments for cystic fibrosis are working.

What Should I Expect from My Pancreatitis Test?

Pancreatitis tests begin with a blood sample being drawn from a patient before being sent to a laboratory for analysis. While there is a normal range attributed to pancreatitis test results, your physician may want to base your results on factors such as your health, age, or other conditions. Speak with your doctor regarding your results to understand how they concern you and your health specifically.
