1. What is a D-dimer test?

   A D-dimer is a protein fragment released when a blood clot in the body dissolves. The D-dimer test determines whether a blood clot is present and can be used to diagnose suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE).

2. What diseases does the D-dimer test detect?

   In select patient populations, a D-dimer test can help diagnose:

   • Deep vein thrombosis
   • Pulmonary embolism
   • Stroke
   • Hypercoagulability
   • Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation

   Some common symptoms of these diseases are:

   • Pain
   • Swelling
   • Discoloration of the legs
   • Shortness of breath
   • Coughing blood
   • Chest pain
   • Rapid heart rate

3. How to get a D-dimer test?

   A simple blood sample is enough to get your D-dimer levels tested.

4. What does a “negative” or “positive” D-dimer test result mean?

   A negative test result means that evidence of abnormal blood clot formation or breakdown was not found. A positive result means there has been some evidence suggesting that serious blood clot formation or degradation occurs in the body.

   However, this test does not specify the cause or location of the blood clot. Increased levels of D-dimer can be seen as a result of recent surgery, some cancers, and other conditions in which fibrin is formed and broken down. Your doctor will suggest further testing to understand your condition and give appropriate treatment.

5. Do I need to visit a doctor?
