Aromatic Solvent Metabolites, Urine
This test profile is used to monitor
exposure to benzene, ethyl benzene, styrene, toluene, and xylenes.
Aromatic solvent toxicity is characterized
by CNS depressant effects (eg, irritation, nausea, dizziness, unconsciousness,
etc). Severity is dependent on the intensity and duration of the exposure.
Damage to the hematopoietic system has also been evidenced. Benzene is listed
as a potential carcinogen. Aromatic solvents are used commercially in numerous
applications, including industrial solvents and chemical intermediates. Aromatic
solvents, which include benzene, ethyl benzene, styrene, toluene, and xylene,
can also be found in paints, paint thinners, and glues. Urine is the preferred
specimen for monitoring of occupational exposure to these solvents. Refer
to individual tests for additional information.
A significant deviation from the
normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
